Maya Angelou was a civil rights activist and poet, best known for her memoir, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” and her major involvement with the Civil-Rights Movement. Along with her numerous poetry and essay collections, she also worked with Malcolm-X and Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement and among her many accomplishments, spoke during former President Bill Clinton’s inauguration ceremony as the Poet Laureate. Among her many honors, her poetry book Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie received a Pulitzer Prize nomination and was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
